BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will once again face top-level competition as part of this year’s spring soccer slate, as announced by head coach Chugger Adair Wednesday.
The Hokies will compete against several teams which finished last season nationally-ranked, as well as teams from power conferences. The Hokies will conclude the spring season with a match against arch-rival Virginia at Thompson Field.
Tech will begin their spring competition playing at a unique venue, the Thomas Indoor Soccer Center at Liberty University , at the Liberty Indoor Soccer Tournament on Feb. 27. This all day event will feature numerous 20-minute games at the indoor facility. The other teams for this event will be announced at a later date.
The Hokies will next travel to Augusta, Georgia to take on Florida on March 19 at 2 p.m. The Gators finished the 2015 season ranked eighth nationally in the NSCAA poll. Florida won the SEC Championship and lost in the third round of the NCAA Tournament to Duke.
On April 9, the Hokies will play a pair of matches at the Southern Soccer Scene Tournament in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Tech will play ACC foe Clemson at 2 p.m..and follow that with a 5 p.m. match against Georgia. Clemson finished the season ranked 13th nationally.
A week later, on April 16, the Hokies will travel to Fairfax, Virginia for a pair of matches. Tech will take on Georgetown at 1 p.m. and George Mason at 3 p.m. The Hokies defeated Georgetown, 2-1, in Washington, D.C. during the regular season.
The spring season concludes on April 24th, as the Hokies will host Tennessee at 1 p.m. and Virginia at 4 p.m. at Thompson Field. The Hokies and Volunteers played to a 1-1 draw during the fall season and Tech did not play the Cavaliers in the fall.
“We are excited about the upcoming spring schedule,” Adair said. “The schedule is very strong and will test the ability of our current team as well as give many players an opportunity to develop in game situations. We are looking forward to these opportunities as a chance to grow the team as well as individuals within the group. This schedule will definitely make us a better side as we try to prepare for our very competitive fall season.”
The Hokies, who finished 18th in the NSCAA poll, look to replace five seniors from last season’s 15-42 squad that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Tech returns third team All-American Murielle Tiernan and eight other starters for the 2016 season.
