INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Virginia Tech will host Cincinnati in the first round on the 2015 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship. The match will be played at Thompson Field on the Virginia Tech campus on Saturday, Nov. 14, at 5 p.m. This will be the Hokies’ eighth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
The Hokies earned a four seed in the event. Tech is 14-3-2 overall and finished 6-3-1 and in fifth place in the ACC this season. The Bearcats are 13-5-5 overall and clinched the AAC Championship Sunday on penalty kicks over South Florida. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
“I’m excited to make the NCAA Tournament,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “This is our eighth straight year in the tournament, which I’m very proud of for the program. I’m very happy for the girls. I think the seniors have done a very good job. It’s one of the most decorated senior classes in program history.”
After going 14-3-2 this season and finishing the regular season fifth in the ACC and ranked 12th by the NSCAA, the Hokies once again earned a first-round home draw.
If the fourth-seeded Hokies win their first-round matchup with the Bearcats, they will play the winner of Ohio State and Butler. Their quadrant of the bracket features one-seed Penn State, two-seed West Virginia and three-seed California.
“I’m proud of the girls, proud of the program and looking forward to getting down and playing some games,” Adair added. “Hopefully we’re ready to go and get everything organized for a very good Cincinnati team.”
Thirty-one conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2015 championship, while the remaining 33 teams were selected at-large. The top 16 teams are seeded and conference teams cannot play each other in the first- or second-rounds. When pairing teams, the committee follows geographic proximity parameters. The top 16 teams will host and all other sites were selected for the first-round to create the least number of flights.
First-round games will be played at campus sites November 13, 14 and 15. Second-round games will be played Friday, November 20, at campus sites, and third-round games will be played Sunday, November 22, at the same campus sites. Quarterfinal games will be played November 27 or 28, also on campus sites.
