GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech women’s soccer players Ashley Meier and Murielle Tiernan earned first team all-conference honors and Jordan Coburn was named to the third team, as announced by the ACC office Thursday morning. Voting was conducted among the league’s 14 head coaches.
This marks the first time that Virginia Tech has placed two players on the first team of the All-ACC selections.
Tiernan was named to the All-ACC First Team for the second consecutive season. The junior forward from Ashburn, Virginia has accounted for a team-leading 13 goals this season, the second-highest tally in the ACC. Tiernan’s 13 goals is the fourth highest single-season total in program history. She is the school’s all-time leader in goals, with 38 and points, with 89. Tiernan was named to the league’s all-freshman team in 2013.
Meier makes the first team for the first time in her career, following three consecutive second team selections. The senior from Strongsville, Ohio, has recorded six goals and five assists this season. She is currently second to Tiernan in career goals at Virginia Tech, with 30 and her 73 career points is third in school history. The accomplished attacking midfielder has earned five ACC postseason awards, the most by any soccer player to wear a Tech uniform.
Jordan Coburn also earned a repeat award after being named to the All-ACC Third Team for the third-consecutive year. The leader on the Hokie backline has helped Tech to another defensive season. Coburn has started all but three games in her entire career and has been an integral part of the Hokie defense all four seasons. She is currently tied for fourth in the ACC in total assists.
“I’m excited to see the news,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “This is well-earned by the student-athletes on the team. Ashley, Murielle and Jordan have all had outstanding seasons and have been significant members of our team and our success. This is the first time that Virginia Tech has had two players earn first team honors.”
Virginia senior forward Makenzy Doniak was voted the ACC Offensive Player of the Year, while fellow Virginia senior Emily Sonnett earned ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors. The Cavaliers’ Steve Swanson was voted the ACC Coach of the Year. Florida State’s Megan Connolly took home both of the league’s remaining annual awards, as she was voted both the ACC Midfielder of the Year and the ACC Freshman of the Year.
Tech will next play in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament the weekend of Nov. 14. Tournament seeds will be announced on the NCAA Tournament Selection Show at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
