BLACKSBURG, Va. – Laila Gray scored two first half goals and the Hokies defeated Pittsburgh, 4-2 in ACC women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Thompson Field.
The Hokies, ranked seventh nationally, improve to 14-2-2 overall and 6-2-1 in league action. The Panthers are now 10-6-1 overall and 4-5 in ACC play.
“I though it was a good game for us,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “We created a lot of chances and were pretty good going forward. We scored four goals; I’m happy with that. I thought the team did a good job there.”
Tech jumped out to a quick lead, as Laila Gray took a pass from Ashley Meier in the 10th minute of play to give Tech a 1-0 lead. Pitt then countered in the 26th minute, as Taylor Pryce scored on a shot to the weak side to knot the match at 1-1.
The Hokies took a 2-1 lead into the intermission, as Gray scored her second goal of the afternoon on a header off of a cross from Madi Conyers. This is Gray’s first multi-goal match of her career.
Tech went up 3-1 in the 58th minute, as leading scorer Murielle Tiernan broke away from the Panther defense and scored her 13th goal of the season and school-record 38th of her career. Alani Johnson scored the Hokies’ fourth and final goal of the afternoon in the 66th minute, as she netted the rebound of a Gray shot. Pitt scored the final goal of the match in the 73rd minute, on a penalty kick by Roosa Arvas.
Kaylyn Smith picked up the win in goal for the Hokies. She recorded six saves on the day, including four in the second half. Tech out shot the Panthers, 19-17 and had eight corner kicks in the match.
Prior to today’s match, the Hokies honored their five graduating seniors. Courtney Stutts, Delia Maresco, Morgan Conklin, Jordan Coburn and Meier all made their final regular season appearance at Thompson Field on Sunday. The seniors won the 62nd match of their collegiate careers this afternoon.
The Hokies conclude the 2015 regular season on Friday night, as they travel to Notre Dame to face the national-ranked Fighting Irish. The match, to be shown on ESPN3, will begin 7 p.m.
