DURHAM, N.C. – Virginia Tech jumped out to a 4-0 lead and went on to defeat Duke, 4-2, in ACC women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Koskinen Stadium in Durham. With the win, the ninth-ranked Hokies improve to 11-1-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play, while the 22^nd-ranked Blue Devils fall to 6-4-3 overall and 0-2-2 in ACC action.

“Extremely proud of the girls tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “I thought they did a great job. Stuck with the game plan in place, start to finish and played good, quality soccer.”

Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 15 minutes into the contest, as Anissa Dadkhah netted her first collegiate goal, off of an assist by Madi Conyers. Though Tech had other first half opportunities, the score remained 1-0 Hokies at the half.

Less than five minutes into the second half, Tech increased the lead to 2-0, on a goal by Laila Gray off of a steal. In the 69^th minute, Murielle Tiernan put the Hokies up 3-0 on a header off of a corner by Jordan Coburn and then Tech put up its fourth goal of the day one an unassisted goal by Caroline Kerns on her first touch of the contest.

“Scoring four goals on the road against a very good Duke team is a huge accomplishment,” Adair added. “I’m proud of them for that.”

Duke scored two goals in the final eight minutes, the first by Casey Martinez and the second on an own goal by the Hokies. Duke actually out shot the Hokies for the game, 17-12, but only five of the 17 shots were on goal.

“I’m very proud of our staff. Drew (Kopp) and Matt (Gwilliam) did a great job in preparing for this match and getting the team ready for a tough road match,” Adair concluded.

The four goals scored by the Hokies are the most against an ACC opponent since Oct. 23 of last season, when Tech won 5-0 at Syracuse. It is the most goals Tech has scored against a nationally-ranked team since Sept. 5, 2014, when the Hokies defeated No. 13 Georgetown, 6-1, at Thompson Field. Tech is now 61-0 all-time when scoring four-or-more goals in a match.

For the third consecutive match, the Hokies played in adverse weather conditions. This match began a three-game road ACC swing for the Hokies. Tech travels to Wake Forest on Thursday night to take on the Demon Deacons. The match begins at 7 p.m.
