BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech recorded its first shutout of the season and defeated UNC Greensboro, 2-0, in women’s soccer action Friday night at Thompson Field.
The match, scheduled to start at 7 p.m., was delayed prior to the opening kickoff for 1:20 due to thunderstorms in the area. With the win, Tech improves to 5-0-1 on the season, while the Spartans fall to 1-4 overall.
“I think we controlled the rhythm and the tempo of the game from the start tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “We played pretty well going forward. We played some good attacking soccer. I’d like to see us put up a few more goals early, but I thought we did a good job in creating chances.”
The Hokies scored goals in each half and dominated all areas of the contest en route to the victory. Tech opened the scoring in the 41st minute, as freshman Caroline Kerns netted her first collegiate goal, off a pass from Bria Dixon.
Tech scored in the second half on a header by Murielle Tiernan, off of a corner kick from Jordan Coburn. The goal is Tiernan’s sixth of the season and closes her to within two points of the all-time points mark at Virginia Tech. Kaylyn Smith went the distance in goal for the Hokies and recorded her first shutout of the season and the third of her career.
“In the second half, we were able to keep it down in that end and keep possession and that’s good for us,” Adair said. “We were knocking on the door. I’d like to see us translate a few more goals from that.”
The Hokies held the Spartans to just two shots in the game, one each in the first and second halves. Tech had 22 shots and attempted 13 corner kicks.
“I was happy to see us get the shutout tonight,” Adair concluded. “It was our first shutout of the year. We need to tighten some things up in the back and I thought we did a good job of that tonight.”
The Hokies return to action on Sunday night, as they travel to Richmond to take on VCU. The match begins at 7 p.m. and will conclude a stretch of five games in nine days for Tech.
