BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech opened the 2015 home schedule with a 2-1 victory over in-state foe James Madison Friday night at Thompson Field. With the win, the Hokies improve to 3-0, while the Dukes fall to 1-2 on the season.

Tech, ranked ninth nationally in the NSCAA poll, jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute of action, as Ashley Meier hit a shot off a cross from Murielle Tiernan that bounded off the left post and found the side net. The score remained the same into the intermission.

In the second half, Tech added to the lead in the 53rd minute. Meier netted her second goal of the night off a rebound. The senior preseason All-ACC selection recorded four shots in the 90 minutes of play.

JMU cut the Tech lead to one goal in the 62nd minute. Allie Bunner placed a shot in the left corner of the net for the Dukes’ only tally of the night.

“I was happy with some of the attacking-minded soccer we had tonight," head coach Chugger Adair said. “I think we could have put one or two more chances away that would have made the game less stressful.”

The Hokies outshot JMU, 20-7 and had 11 corner kicks to the Dukes’ one attempt. JMU goalie Ellen Forrest record seven saves, while Tech’s Kaylyn Smith, who improved to 3-0 on the season, record three saves.

“JMU is a very good team; they’re really our local rivals,” Adair added. “It was a very difficult match for us. They played hard, they played well and made it a very difficult match for us.”

Tech will return to action on Sunday evening, as they host Tennessee at 5 p.m. on Thompson Field. The game will be broadcast by ESPN3.
