Hokies control exhibition against Marshall, 6-0
Teirnan tallies twice in victory

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech scored four goals in the first 30 minutes and cruised to a 6-0 exhibition victory against Marshall on Saturday afternoon at Thompson Field.

The Hokies started the scoring in the ninth minute of action with a goal by Kallie Peurifoy, on a cross to the left side by Ashley Meier. Murielle Tiernan then registered back-to-back goals, the first in the 22nd minute off a corner from Jordan Coburn and the second in the box in the 24th minute, with the assist from Laila Gray.

The lead moved to 4-0 in the 28th minute, as Madi Conyers scored on a rebound off a shot by Gray. Goal No. 5 came in the 38th minute, as freshman Caroline Kerns scored unassisted on a breakaway. The scoring wrapped up in the 58th minute, as Alani Johnson scored an unassisted goal. The match was scoreless in the final 30 minutes of action.

Tech used its entire roster in the contest, including splitting the time in goal for all three goalies. Starter Kaylyn Smith started the match and registered three of the Hokies’ five saves on the day. The Hokies outshot the Thundering Herd, 21-10 and took 12 corner kicks in the contest.

This is the Hokies’ only exhibition match of the preseason, as the regular season gets underway next week at the Hoosier Classic. Tech plays host Indiana Friday night, August 21, at 7 p.m. and will play nationally-ranked West Virginia on Sunday, August 23 at Indiana at noon.
