Tech golf, women's soccer teams earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards
Both are among the top 10 percent academically in their respective sports

BLACKSBURG – The NCAA released its annual recipients of the Public Recognition Awards, which goes to the sports programs with an Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of its respective sport, and both the Tech golf program and the women’s soccer program received the distinction.

The APR is a scorecard that tracks classroom performance of Division I sports teams, and it takes into account eligibility and retention of student-athletes over a four-year period. It measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or quarter and provides a clear picture of the academic performance for each team in each sport. Teams must meet a certain academic threshold to qualify for the postseason, and they also can face penalties for continued low academic performance. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14 academic years.

The Tech men’s golf program recorded a perfect multi-year score of 1,000 for the sixth straight year. The Tech women’s soccer program also recorded a multi-year score of 997, earning a Public Recognition Award for the second consecutive year.

The Tech golf program just completed a season in which it advanced to an NCAA regional for the ninth consecutive season. The Hokies’ women’s soccer program earned its seventh consecutive bid to the NCAA Championships and made it to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year.
