Hokies welcome Shannon Lewis to staff as volunteer assistant
10-year ECU assistant joins women's soccer program

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech head women’s soccer coach Chugger Adair announced Tuesday that former East Carolina assistant coach Shannon Lewis will join the Virginia Tech women’s soccer program as a volunteer assistant coach.

“I’m excited to add Shannon to our staff,” said Adair. “She brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with her so this addition will benefit our program, our staff and our team in general. I’m confident she’s gong to be a good fit and a great addition to the Virginia Tech women’s soccer family.”

As an assistant at ECU for 10 years, Lewis handled day-to-day coaching responsibilities, coordinated recruiting efforts and monitored student-athlete academics. In 2012, the Pirates received their 11th-straight NSCAA Team Academic Award. Lewis has also mentored four NSCAA All-South Region Selections, 11 All-Conference USA selections and two All-American Athletic Conference players.

“I am really excited to join Virginia Tech and the Hokie women’s soccer family,” Lewis said. “This is a university, soccer program and staff that I have a tremendous amount of respect for and have been a fan of for a long time. I am thankful to Chugger [Adair] and Drew [Kopp] for extending the invitation to help with the program, and I look forward to contributing to the success, both on and off the field.”

Prior to her time at ECU, Lewis was a graduate assistant coach at Marshall from 2003-05 and an assistant coach at her alma Mater, N.C. Wesleyan, from 2002-03. She also spent two years as an assistant coach with the North Carolina Olympic Development Program in 2009-10.

As a player at N.C. Wesleyan, Lewis was a four-year starter, four-time Dixie Conference First Team and Scholar Athlete selection, three-time All-Region selection and three-year team captain. She helped N.C. Wesleyan to three Div. III NCAA Tournaments (1999-2001), one Elite Eight appearance (1999) and four Dixie Conference titles. She was named the 1998 Dixie Conference Rookie of the Year.

Lewis will be added to the women’s soccer staff as a fourth assistant.

Lewis comes to Blacksburg with her husband, Erik, who recently joined the Virginia Tech staff as an assistant director of equipment services. They are the proud parents two girls, Gwen (2 years old) and Merryn (3 months old).
