GREENSBORO, N.C. - Six members of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team were named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Academic Team, as announced by conference Commissioner John Swofford Tuesday. Seniors Shannon Mayrose and Katie Yensen, juniors Jordan Coburn and Ashley Meier and sophomores Candace Cephers and Murielle Tiernan were all honored by the conference for their performance in the classroom and on the field this year.
Mayrose, a sixth-year senior in graduate school studying counselor education, earned her third-straight ACC All-Academic Team selection with this year’s honor. She has a 4.00 GPA in graduate school and notched eight goals and four assists last season. The Freehold, New Jersey, native is second in school history in career game-winning goals with 10, second in school history in career goals with 27 and eighth in school history in career assists with 13. Earlier this season she was named to the All-ACC Third Team and the Capital One Academic All-District Team.
Yensen, a Biology major from Falls Church, Virginia, has a near-4.0 GPA and has already received numerous academic awards this year and throughout her career. In November, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team. Last year she was awarded the prestigious Skelton Award for Academic Excellence in Athletics, the highest designation given out by the Tech athletics department. She also received the Elite-89 award from the NCAA. This is her second-consecutive ACC All-Academic Team selection.
Coburn, a communications major from Ellicott City, Maryland, also earned her second-consecutive ACC All-Academic Team selection this year. The three-year starter is a stalwart to the Hokie defense that allowed a program record-low 18 goals in 2014. Earlier this season, Coburn was also named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region Third Team and the All-ACC Third Team.
Meier, a junior psychology major from Strongsville, Ohio, earned her third ACC All-Academic Team selection with this year’s award. The midfielder tallied seven goals and three assists this season before earning NSCAA All-Southeast Region Second Team honors and All-ACC Second Team honors.
Cephers, a sophomore biology major from Aurora, Colorado, garnered her first ACC All-Academic Team selection this year, but adds the award to the many others she has earned in her two seasons with the Hokies. The sophomore was named to this year’s NSCAA All-Southeast Region Third Team and this year’s All-ACC Third Team. This season, Cephers recorded six goals from the defensive midfield position.
Tiernan, a sophomore from Ashburn, Virginia, was also a repeat selection this year. After scoring 14 goals and assisting six, Tiernan was named to the NSCAA All-Southeast Region First Team and the All-ACC First Team. After only two seasons as a Hokie, Tiernan is already fifth all-time in career goals at Tech with 25, tied for fifth in career points with 61 and has the third-most single-season goal tally in program history at 14.
The Hokies finished the 2014 season with a record of 16-6 and a No. 12 ranking in the NSCAA poll. In it’s seventh-straight NCAA Tournament, Tech advanced to its second-straight Sweet 16 before falling to Penn State.
Ten schools are represented on this year’s All-Academic Team, which includes five student-athletes that earned NSCAA All-America honors in 2014. Seven members of the ACC All-Academic Team were named to either 2014 Capital One Academic All-America Team or the NSCAA Scholar All-America Team. The ACC All-Academic Team also includes 21 players that were named to the first, second or third All-ACC team and seven members of the ACC All-Freshman team.
Alongwith Tech’s Mayrose and Meier, four other players claimed their third ACC All-Academic Team honors, including Stephanie McCaffrey, who earned her fourth.
Florida State senior midfielder Dagny Brynjarsdottir was named the 2014 Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She earned ACC Offensive Player of the Year honors and was named the ACC Women’s Soccer Championship’s Most Valuable Player in 2014. Brynjarsdottir earned NSCAA First Team All-America honors, was a finalist for the Honda Award and runner-up for the MAC Hermann Trophy following the 2014 season in which she led the Seminoles to their first NCAA title and second straight ACC Championship.
