HARRISONBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech women’s soccer players Murielle Tiernan, Jordan Coburn and Ashley Meier were selected to the 2014 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) University Division All-State Women’s Soccer team, as announced by VaSID on Friday.
Tiernan, who has already received NSCAA All-Southeast Region and All-ACC honors this season, was placed on the VaSID First Team for the second-straight season. The sophomore forward has accounted for a team-leading 14 goals this season, the third-highest single-season total in Tech history. She has also recorded 34 points, the second-highest single-season total in Tech history. Only a sophomore, Tiernan is already tied for fifth for career goals at Virginia Tech with 25.
Coburn was also named to the VaSID First Team, earning her second VaSID All-State honor. Earlier this year she was named to the All-ACC Third Team and the NSCAA All-Southeast Region Third Team. The leader on the stout Hokie backline has helped Tech to its best defensive season in history in which it gave up only 18 goals in the entire season, surpassing the previous record of 20. Coburn has started all but one game in her entire career and has been an integral part of the Hokie defense in each of the last three seasons.
Meier, who has also already received NSCAA All-Southeast Region and All-ACC honors this season, was named to the VaSID Second Team, earning her second VaSID honor. The junior recently scored the game-winning overtime goal in the Hokies’ NCAA second-round game against Georgetown to propel Tech into the NCAA Round of 16. Meier scored seven goals and assisted three from the offensive midfielder position this season.
VaSID names 27 all-state teams in 15 sports each year, as well as an academic All-State squad and an all-sports champion in both the University (Division I) and College (all non-Division I schools) Divisions. Membership in VaSID is open to all media relations professionals working at a university or conference in the state of Virginia.
