BLACKSBURG - Four Virginia Tech women’s soccer players were named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women’s All-Southeast Region teams. Sophomore Murielle Tiernan was named to the first team, junior Ashley Meier was named to the second team and sophomore Candace Cephers and junior Jordan Coburn were named to the third team, as announced by the NSCAA Wednesday.
Prior to Wednesday afternoon, four players in Virginia Tech women’s soccer history have been named to one of the three NSCAA All-Southeast Region teams. This year, four Hokies received All-Southeast team honors, doubling the tally for Tech players selected.
Tiernan was named to the All-Southeast Region First Team for the first time in her career. The sophomore forward has accounted for a team-leading 14 goals this season, the third-highest single-season total in Tech history. She has also recorded 31 points, the second-highest single-season total in Tech history. Only a sophomore, Tiernan is already tied for fifth for career goals at Virginia Tech with 25. Tiernan’s first-team selection places her on the ballot for NSCAA All-America honors, which will be announced on Friday, Dec. 5.
Meier earned the second-team honor for the second-straight year, adding the award to her All-ACC Second Team selection this season. The junior recently scored the game-winning overtime goal in the Hokies’ NCAA second-round game against Georgetown to propel Tech into the NCAA Round of 16. Meier has scored seven goals and assisted three from the offensive midfielder position this season.
Coburn also earned the NSCAA All-Southeast Region (Third Team) honor for the second-straight season, after she was named to the second team last year. The leader on the stout Hokie backline has helped Tech to its best defensive season in history in which it gave up only 18 goals in the entire season, surpassing the previous record of 20. Coburn has started all but one game in her entire career and has been an integral part of the Hokie defense in each of the last three seasons.
Cephers received the NSCAA All-Southeast Region Third Team selection for the first time in her young career. The sophomore has proven a dangerous scorer on set pieces, having scored six goals this season. The strong defensive midfielder has proven herself valuable to Tech’s defensive game plans, consistently shutting down opponent’s go-to players in the midfield.
Virginia Tech’s four selections were tied with Virginia for the most from any team in the southeast region, which includes soccer powerhouses Florida State, North Carolina and Notre Dame.
