Hokies to face Georgetown again in second round of the NCAA Tournament
Tech looking to advance into Sweet 16

BLACKSBURG - The 14th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team is set to take on Georgetown for the second time this season in the second-round of NCAA Tournament Friday at 4:30 p.m. at Penn State’s Jeffrey Field.

One of the Hokies’ biggest wins of the regular season came against Georgetown. On September 5 of this year, Tech dominated the 13th-ranked Hoyas, winning by a lopsided score of 6-1.

Danielle King began the scoring in the Hokies fifth game of the year with a shot from over 30 yards away that soared into the top corner of the goal after just 11 minutes of play. Tech then scored their second goal two minutes later, one of Murielle Tiernan’s two goals on the day. Immediately following halftime, the Hoyas came alive, scoring a goal to cut the lead to 2-1, but Tech answered with a third goal just thirty seconds later.

The Georgetown side, eager to avenge their loss from earlier this year, had their biggest win of the year last week in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas downed No. 7 West Virginia in a penalty kick shootout after a scoreless period of regulation and overtime. It was the third-straight season in which the Hoyas won a first-round game in the tournament.

The Hokies hosted Dayton in the first-round of the tournament last weekend and picked up a 4-0 win. The Hokies clinched the game early, scoring all of their goals in the first half en route to their fourth second-round appearance in the last six years. Sophomore leading scorer Tiernan scored two goals in the win and picked up an assist.

After posting four goals in last week’s effort, this year’s Hokie squad became the highest-scoring team in Tech history, having netted 57 goals. The mark surpassed last year’s tally of 56.

If Tech wins on Friday they will face the winner of Connecticut and host Penn State on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jeffrey Field.

Friday’s game will have live stats available online and live video available on Penn State’s video site.
