BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team has been selected to play in their seventh-straight NCAA Tournament. They have been tabbed to play Dayton in the first round of the 33rd NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, as announced by the Division I Women’s Soccer Committee Monday.
“This is tremendous for our program,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “It’s hats-off to our girls and the seniors and the leadership on this team. I’m really excited for them and what they’ve done and how they’ve run their careers at Virginia Tech. I’m extremely proud of them and what they’ve accomplished.”
After going 14-5 this season and finishing the regular season ranked 14th by the NSCAA, the Hokies earned a first-round home draw. They will host Dayton on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.
If Tech wins their first-round matchup with Dayton, they will play the winner of three-seed West Virginia and Georgetown. Their quadrant of the bracket features one-seed Texas A&M, two-seed Penn State, three-seed West Virginia and four-seed Notre Dame.
The Dayton Flyers recently won the Atlantic 10 Championship and posted a 12-8-2 overall record this year. This is the third time Tech has drawn a first-round matchup with Dayton in the last six years. In 2010 the Hokies fell to the Flyers 3-0 and, in 2009, Tech beat Dayton 3-1.
“This is a classic matchup,” head coach Chugger Adair commented. “Dayton is a team we’ve played a couple of times in the NCAA Tournament. They are a very good side, very well coached and very well organized. They are coming off a big A-10 Championships, and they’re going to be a challenge for us. We’re going to have to make sure we’re ready for them Saturday night.”
Thirty-one conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2014 championship, while the remaining 33 teams were selected at-large. The top 16 teams are seeded and conference teams cannot play each other in the first- or second-rounds. When pairing teams, the committee follows geographic proximity parameters. The top 16 teams will host and all other sites were selected for the first-round to create the least number of flights.
First-round games will be played at campus sites November 14, 15 and 16. Second-round games will be played Friday, November 21, at campus sites, and third-round games will be played Sunday, November 23, at the same campus sites. Quarterfinal games will be played November 28 or 29 also on campus sites.
The 33rd annual NCAA Women’s College Cup will be played December 5 and December 7 at FAU Stadium in Boca Raton, Florida, with Florida Atlantic University and the Palm Beach County Sports Commission serving as co-hosts. The first national semifinal will be played and shown live on ESPNU at 5 p.m. Eastern time Friday, December 5. The second semifinal will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. Eastern time live on ESPNU. The national championship match will take place at 1 p.m. Eastern time on Sunday, December 7 and will also broadcast live on ESPNU.
