GREENSBORO, N.C. - A record six Virginia Tech women’s soccer players earned all-conference honors as announced by the ACC office Thursday morning.
Senior Shannon Mayrose, juniors Jordan Coburn and Ashley Meier, sophomores Murielle Tiernan and Candace Cephers and freshman Madi Conyers were named to an All-ACC team, marking the most all-conference selections in program history, surpassing last year’s four selections.
Tiernan was named to the All-ACC First Team for the first time in her career, following last year’s selection to the ACC All-Freshman Team. The sophomore forward has accounted for a team-leading 11 goals this season, the fourth-highest tally in the ACC. With NCAA Tournament play remaining, Tiernan has already tied her goal total from last season, which is the fourth highest single-season total in program history. With 22 goals in only two seasons, Tiernan is on pace to shatter the Virginia Tech career-goal record of 29.
Meier was named to the All-ACC Second Team for the third-consecutive year, a feat that has never been accomplished in Tech history. The junior has recorded five goals and two assists this season and is tied with Tiernan in the seventh spot for most career goals in program history with 22. The accomplished attacking midfielder has earned four ACC postseason awards, the most by any soccer player to wear a Tech uniform.
Jordan Coburn also earned a repeat award after being named to the All-ACC Third Team for the second-consecutive year. The leader on the stout Hokie backline has helped Tech to its best defensive season in history in which it gave up only 13 goals in the entire regular season, surpassing the record set by last year’s squad of 14. Coburn has started all but one game in her entire career and has been an integral part of the Hokie defense in each of the last three seasons.
Mayrose was also named to the All-ACC Third Team, earning her first all-conference award in her final season with the Hokies. The sixth-year senior has led the Hokie attack which has scored 53 goals this season, the second-best mark in the ACC. She has tallied seven goals and assisted four this season and is tied for third with Kelly Conheeney on the all-time career goals list with 26. She needs only three goals to become Tech’s all-time leading scorer.
Cephers was Tech’s third selection onto the All-ACC Third Team, also earning her first all-conference award. The sophomore has proven a dangerous scorer on set pieces, having scored six goals this season. The strong defensive midfielder has proven herself valuable to Tech’s defensive game plans, consistently shutting down opponent’s go-to players in the midfield.
Conyers was named to the ACC All-Freshman Team after a stellar freshman campaign. Starting five games and filling in as a crucial reserve, the outside midfielder has tallied 10 points off of three goals and four assists this season. Conyers became the 12th freshman to be named to the ACC All-Freshman Team since Tech joined the conference in 2004. She is the third member of the current squad to be honored with the award, joining Tiernan and Meier.
No. 2 Florida State earned multiple individual awards with Mark Kirkorian being named Coach of the Year, Dagny Brynarsdottir being named Offensive Player of the Year and Kristin Grubka being named Defensive Player of the Year. Danielle Colaprico from Virginia was named the Midfielder of the Year, and Megan Buckingham of North Carolina was named the Freshman of the Year.
Tech will next play in the first-round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14, 15 or 16. Tournament seeds will be announced on the NCAA Tournament Selection Show at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
