LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The 15^th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team earned a 3-0 win at Louisville in their last regular-season game of the year off of goals from Katie Yensen, Ashley Meier and Shannon Mayrose.

“I was pleased with our performance early.,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “We were aggressive and motivated to take the game which was important, especially early on, to take the goal and open the game up. Three points on the road is important, especially going into the NCAA tournament.”

The Hokies (14-5, 5-5 ACC) came into the game eager to bounce back from their 2-0 loss to No. 3 Virginia last Sunday afternoon. Louisville (7-9-2, 3-5-2 ACC) was also coming off a loss to a top team, having lost to No. 9 Notre Dame, 1-0, last Sunday.

Tech broke the scoring open in the ninth minute of play when an outside cross that was finished by the head of Katie Yensen. Madi Conyers possessed the ball on the right attacking wing and beat her player one-on-one before sending in the cross. Yensen finished the pass with a header to the back post to put Tech up 1-0.

Only five minutes later, Yensen got involved in another play when she found the ball on the left wing and sent a cross into the middle. Ashley Meier one-touched the ball at the goal straight off the post, but she picked up a jumbled rebound and fired in her fifth goal of the year to put Tech up 2-0.

For the Hokies’ last two road games, the game has been decided early. Against Syracuse last week, Tech took a 2-0 lead after 17 minutes of play and they did it again tonight, scoring two goals in only 14 minutes of play.

The experienced sixth-year senior Shannon Mayrose decided two goals wasn’t enough in the first half, and she put away a third Tech goal after picking up a loose ball from a Cardinal defender with only 50 second remaining in the half.

The goal from Mayrose gives her 25 career goals and moves her into a tie for fourth all-time at Virginia Tech. She is tied with Jazmine Reeves in the fourth spot and needs only one more goal to move into a tie for third, and two more to move into a tie for second. She is four goals away the all-time record of 29.

Tech’s defense was strong in the game, picking up their 11^th shutout of the year and holding Louisville to only five shots on goal and no corner kicks.

At keeper for the Hokies, Kaylyn Smith made her fourth start, earning her third win and tallying five saves.

With the win, Tech closes out their regular season with a 5-5 ACC record, placing them in sixth place in the ACC. Only the top four teams will play in the ACC Tournament, which will feature No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Virginia, No. 5 North Carolina and No. 9 Notre Dame next weekend.

The Hokies will play next in the NCAA Tournament, assuming they are selected as part of the 64-team field. Their tournament seed will be announced during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on Nov. 10 at 4:30 p.m. The first round will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15.
