BLACKSBURG - Seniors Katie Yensen and Shannon Mayrose of the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team were named to the Capital One Academic All-District Team on Thursday. The Capital One Academic All-District Team honors the nation’s top student-athletes for their performances in both athletics and in the classroom.
The Academic All-District teams include student-athletes that are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. Yensen and Mayrose are two of 11 student-athletes that were selected from District 3 which includes North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. Of the 11 selections, five are from the ACC, and Virginia Tech is the only school in this district to have two student-athletes selected.
Mayrose, a sixth-year senior in graduate school studying counselor education, has a 4.00 GPA in graduate school and has notched six goals and four assists this season. The Freehold, New Jersey, native is second in school history in career game-winning goals with 10, fifth in school history in career goals with 24 and eighth in school history in career assists with 12. She is a two-time ACC All-Academic Team selection and a 2011 VaSID All-State Second Team selection.
Yensen, majoring in biology, has a 3.97 GPA and has scored two goals and dished five assists this season. The Falls Church, Virginia, native is third in school history in career game-winners with nine, and the Hokies are 24-0 when she tallies a point. Last spring, she won the Skelton award for Academic Excellence in Athletics at Tech, the highest recognition given by the athletics department.
Both seniors are now eligible for Academic All-America honors.
