BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell to No. 3 Virginia, 2-0, on Senior Night at Thompson Field.

“It was a shame that we gave up that goal early on the corner kick,” head coach Chugger Adair commented after the game. “We didn’t have the intensity and passion on that set piece and they had a good quality serve and finish. We were chasing the game from the first ten minutes on. We weren’t very sharp with our possession tonight - I was disappointed with that. I think UVA is a good side and they capitalized when we couldn’t take care of the ball.”

Virginia (16-1, 8-1 ACC) started their attack early, earning two shots and two corner kicks in the first five minutes, but at each opportunity Tech (13-5, 4-5 ACC) was there to make the stop. One of the Cavalier shots, a low strike to the left side of the goal, was stopped by freshman keeper Kaylyn Smith, who made her third start of her career in tonight’s game.

The Cavaliers’ offensive pressure became too much to handle in the 11th minute when Virginia put away the first goal of the game. A corner kick from Danielle Colaprico, the ACC’s leader in assists, found the head of Kristen McNabb, who headed the ball into the goal to put the ‘Hoos up 1-0.

Tech nearly put one away in the 20th minute after Ashley Meier setup Kallie Peurifoy for a shot just within the 18-yard box. Peurifoy took a powerful strike on the ball but the shot sailed just over the crossbar.

In the second half, Virginia found a goal within the first five minutes of play on a counter attack led by ACC leading scorer Makenzy Doniak. A cross from the outside setup Meghan Cox with a header that hit the cross bar. Doniak volleyed the rebound into the goal to put Tech up 2-0.

Tech nearly found the net in the 84th minute when Shannon Mayrose ripped a shot to the cross bar. Attacking pressure from the Hokies in the last few minutes of play came up empty and Tech lost by a score of 2-0.
