BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team hosts rival No. 3 Virginia in the last regular season home game on Sunday night at Thompson Field.
The Hokies come into Sunday’s game after one of their largest scoring efforts of the year against Syracuse. Tech won by a score of 5-0 in an ACC road game. The Hokies put the game away early, going up 4-0 before halftime and eventually adding a fifth goal on a penalty kick with only seconds remaining in the game. Murielle Tiernan and Candace Cephers both scored two goals in the match and Shannon Mayrose added another.
The Cavaliers are also coming off a win, having beaten Duke, 3-1, last Thursday evening. The Cavaliers had to rally from behind after conceding the first goal to Duke in the 21st minute but their high-powered offense was enough to regain the lead and eventually earn a convincing win.
Tech is 3-13-1 all-time against Virginia, but their last battle was one of Tech’s most impressive wins in program history. In the 2013 ACC semifinal, Tech dominated the Cavaliers, scoring four goals on the undefeated and top-ranked Virginia side to advance to the ACC Championship game.
Tomorrow night’s game is sponsored by Virginia529, the official college savings plan of Virginia Tech Athletics. It is also a potential point in the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash, the new point rivalry series between the Cavaliers and the Hokies. Currently the score for the clash is Virginia 1.5, Virginia Tech 0. Learn more about Virginia529 and this new competition at thecommonwealthclash.com.
The game is this year's senior night, so Tech's six seniors will be honored before the game.
Game time is set for 5 p.m. and live stats will be available online. The match is this year’s maroon effect game, so fans are encouraged to wear maroon. The first 200 fans will receive a free “Beat UVA” tee shirt.
