No. 10 Hokies return home to play Demon Deacons
Tech looks to bounce back from loss to No. 2 Florida State

BLACKSBURG - The tenth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team plays host to Wake Forest in an always-important ACC conference game Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Thompson Field.

Tech comes into Saturday’s game having lost three of its last five and in a must-win situation for every ACC game remaining. Only the top four teams in the ACC standings make it to the ACC Tournament this year, and the Hokies are currently in seventh place with nine points, three behind Notre Dame and one behind Clemson and Duke. Florida State, North Carolina and Virginia make up the top-three spots.

The Hokies’ last game, at No. 2 Florida State, ended with a heartbreaking loss after three goals in the last ten minutes of play decided the drama-filled ACC contest. The score remained 0-0 until Florida State scored in the 81st minute. Tech immediately responded, scoring on a free kick from Kallie Peurifoy only thirty seconds later to tie the game at 1-1. The final seven minutes saw the Seminoles miss a penalty kick but score on a header with three minutes left to hand Tech a 2-1 loss.

Wake Forest was also in action over the weekend on Sunday when they lost to Duke, 2-1, at home. The Blue Devils scored a game-winning goal off of a header in the 74th minute and kept the Demon Deacons from taking a shot in the final 15 minutes of play to earn the ACC win.

Tech is 5-2-5 all-time against Wake Forest, but they haven’t lost to the Demon Deacons since 2008. Last year, the Hokies won 2-1 in overtime after Murielle Tiernan scored a game-winning goal in the 99th minute. The extra-time decision marked the third time in five years a game against Wake has been forced into overtime.

Tomorrow night’s event is this year’s “kick it to cancer” game so the first 500 fans will receive a free pink metallic pom pom and the Tech players will be wearing pink jerseys and teal socks in an effort to spread awareness for breast and ovarian cancer.

Live stats for the game will be available online here.
