No. 9 Hokies take trip to the sunshine state to battle Miami and No. 2 Florida State
Longest road trip of the season features two pivotal ACC games

BLACKSBURG - The ninth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team travels to Florida for a pair of ACC games against Miami on Thursday and No. 2 Florida State on Sunday.

Last weekend, the Hokies fell to No. 8 North Carolina, 3-2, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The Tar Heels got on the board early, scoring in the fourth minute and eventually increased their lead to 3-0 by the 48th minute. The Hokies showed no quit on their side, as Candace Cephers and Murielle Tiernan scored goals in the next ten minutes to cut the lead to 3-2. Despite quality Tech pressure and attack, the Hokies were unable to score an equalizer before the end of the game and they fell to 11-2-0 on the year, 2-2-0 in the ACC.

Tech’s two opponent’s for this weekend faced off against one another last Saturday night when Florida State came away with a 3-0 win at Miami. The Seminoles’ first goal didn’t come until the 65th minute when Isabella Schmid scored on a free kick from just over 20 yards away. The talented Florida State forward Berlind Thorvaldottir scored twice in the final 25 minutes to seal the win over the Canes.

Entering the week, the Seminoles and the Hokies rank as the top-two teams in many ACC offensive and defensive categories. The two teams sit one and two in offensive points, where Tech has 121 and Florida State has 111. Tech also leads the ACC in goals with 42, but Florida State is in third with 35. On the defensive side, Florida State is tied for first with only six goals allowed and the Hokies are in third with eight. Additionally, both teams have an ACC-leading eight shutouts on the year.

Atop the ACC individual stat column for points is Tech’s Tiernan with 21, one spot ahead of the Seminole’s Thorvaldsdottir who has 19. The two dangerous forwards are also tied for the ACC lead in goals with nine.

Tech holds a 7-4-3 all-time record against Miami, and they hasn’t lost to the Canes since 2010. Tech’s record against Florida State, however, is 0-1-14. The most recent losses came in last year’s post season when Tech fell in the College Cup semifinal game, 3-2, and in the ACC Championship game, 1-0. In the Hokies’ best season in program history last year, they only lost five games. Three of those losses came by the hand of Florida State. The Seminoles are currently on a seven-game winning streak that includes a 1-0 win over No. 4 Virginia and a 6-0 win over Louisville.
