BLACKSBURG - The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team travels to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on Friday afternoon looking to accomplish something they’ve never done: beat No. 8 North Carolina on the road.
The critical top-10 ACC matchup features two of the best teams in college soccer. The Hokies are 11-1-0 this season, 2-1-0 in the ACC. They have defeated Duke 2-0 and then-No. 20 Clemson 2-0. The Hokies also beat then-No.13 Georgetown 6-1, but a trip to the Tar Heels’ (6-2-1, 3-0-0 ACC) home field will be one of their toughest tests to date.
North Carolina is no stranger to top competition, having already beaten No. 14 Notre Dame and No. 21 Clemson, tied No. 1 UCLA, and lost to No. 3 Stanford and No. 11 Pepperdine. Last Sunday, the Tar Heels defeated NC State 2-1.
Last year, Tech opened ACC play by playing host to then-No. 1 North Carolina at Thompson Field. The Hokies entered the match undefeated, but lost 2-1. The Hokies are 2-10-0 all time against the Heels, with a 0-4 record when playing away, but head coach Chugger Adair has only lost once at Fetzer Field.
Every ACC game is important with this year’s postseason adjustment allowing only four teams into the ACC Tournament, but a game between two of last year’s semifinalists is even more important.
The game will be broadcast on various regional sports networks, including Comcast Sports Network, and on ESPN3 (subject to blackout). For a full listing of broadcast information click here. Live stats will also be available here.
