BLACKSBURG - The second-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will look to avenge Thursday night’s loss to No. 20 Notre Dame when it hosts Duke in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Elite Eight game where Tech won 3-0.
Tech is 2-9-1 all-time against the Blue Devils, but last year the Hokies got the better of them when it mattered most. In the regular season, the two teams met in Durham, North Carolina, and finished with a 1-1 draw, but two months later in the NCAA Elite Eight, Tech earned a 3-0 victory that propelled them into the 2013 College Cup for the first time in program history.
On Thursday night, Tech fell to No. 20 Notre Dame, 2-0, to its their record to 10-1-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in the ACC. The Irish handed the Hokies their first loss and ended their program-best 10-game winning streak. It was the first time Tech has been shutout at home since 2012, when it fell to Virginia, 5-0.
Also in action on Thursday, Duke upended NC State, 1-0, for its third-straight win to improve to 6-4-0 on the year, 2-0-0 in the ACC. Fourteen minutes into the match, Rebecca Quinn scored the game-winner off of a cross from Toni Payne.
Sunday’s game is set to kickoff at 5 p.m. at Thompson Field, and live stats will be available online here hokiesports.com/wsoccer/live.
Fans are encouraged to wear their favorite orange Virginia Tech apparel. Kids will receive free ice cream before the game, while supplies last, and the Virginia Tech cheerleaders will perform at halftime.
