BLACKSBURG - Two undefeated teams square off at Thompson Field on Friday when No. 17 Clemson takes on the second-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team.
The two teams open ACC play having had great success against non-conference opponents so far this season. Clemson has started the year 7-0-1, their best start in program history since 2000. Tech is 9-0-0, hoping to extend their nine-game winning streak to 10 games to secure the longest winning streak in program history.
Tech sits in the top spot in the ACC in scoring offense, averaging 4.00 goals per game, and Clemson isn’t far behind, averaging 3.00 goals per game, in the third spot. The two teams compare similarly on defense, as the Hokies lead the ACC in scoring defense, allowing teams an average of 0.33 goals per game, and the Tigers are right behind, holding their opponents to 0.36 goals per game.
Last Sunday, No. 17 Clemson earned a win against Wofford. Senior Katelyn Reeve scored the game-winner in the 84th minute to give the Tigers the 1-0 win. Clemson outshot Wofford 39-1 but were held to only one goal.
Last Friday night, Tech beat Buffalo 5-0 and, on Sunday afternoon, beat East Carolina 3-0. Two Hokies had big weekends and were instrumental in picking up the wins: Both sophomore Murielle Tiernan and freshman Madi Conyers scored three goals and assisted one in the weekend wins.
The Hokies have faced Clemson 10 times in program history. Tech leads the series with a record of 5-3-2, having won each of the last five meetings. Last year, Tech earned a 1-0 victory in overtime after Katie Yensen scored the game-winner 44 seconds into the extra time.
Game time is slated for 6 p.m. at Thompson Field. Live stats will be available online, and live video will be available on ESPN3.
Fans will have a chance to win Virginia Tech Nike gear at the game and the High Techs will perform at halftime. All fans are encouraged to bring granola bars for Micah’s Backpack.
Following the game, the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team will face Wake Forest at 8:30 p.m. at Thompson Field.
