BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team earned its highest ranking in program history for the second-straight week after being placed as the No. 2 team in the nation by the NSCAA rankings on Tuesday. Sophomore Murielle Tiernan was also named the co-ACC Player of the Week along with other awards.
The Hokies earned the ranking following a week of success featuring three wins against Longwood (4-1 score), Buffalo (5-0) and East Carolina (3-0). Tech outscored its opponents 12-1 and increased its season total in goals to 36, the highest mark in NCAA women’s soccer. After giving up only one goal in the three games, the Hokies goals-against average for this season is 0.33, the lowest mark in the ACC.
Tech (586 points) jumped ahead of former-No. 2 Virginia (582) points and sits behind No. 1 UCLA (624 points). Stanford sits in the fourth spot with fellow-ACC foe Florida State taking the fifth spot. The Hokies received one first-place vote, behind UCLA’s 24. The ACC currently has four teams ranked in the top 10 and six teams ranked in the top 25.
Tiernan was named the co-ACC Player of the Week following her 10-point, five-goal, one-assist performance last week. She recorded game-winning goals in two straight games. Longwood and Buffalo, moving her into a tie for fifth all-time in program history for game-winning goals with seven. The sophomore leads the ACC in points (16) and goals (seven).
In addition to the ACC award, she received national recognition after being named the College Sports Madness National Offensive Player of the Week. The Ashburn, Virginia, native was also named to the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week. Finally, Tiernan was tabbed as the Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week, an award given to one Virginia Tech athlete from any varsity sport’s program who performed exceptionally well.
The second-ranked Hokies (9-0-0) open their ACC play against No. 17 Clemson (7-0-1) on Friday night at 6 p.m. at Thompson Field.
