GREENVILLE, North Carolina - The third-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team earned their record-tying ninth-straight win at East Carolina. Freshman Madi Conyers, senior Shannon Mayrose and sophomore Murielle Tiernan scored in the Hokies 3-0 win.

“I thought we had a slow start in the first half,” head coach Chugger Adair said after the game. “We seemed a little heavy legged and not as sharp as we needed to be. In the second half, we talked about being patient and making good decisions and breaking them down defensively. I thought we did a real good job doing that.”

Winning big has become the norm for the 2014 Hokies (9-0-0). In a lopsided affair against ECU (5-2-0), Tech continued their streak of dominant wins.

Tech controlled the possession of the game but was unable to put away a goal during the first half of play. The ball remained on the Pirates’ side of the field for nearly the entire half, where the Hokies earned three corners and gave up none.

In the 28th minute, Tech created an opportunity to score when Ashley Meier found in opening in near the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot, but ECU goalie Saundra Baron was there to make the save.

It didn’t take long in the second half for Tech to get on the board. In the 54th minute, senior Katie Yensen made a move past a Pirate defender down the left wing, crossed the ball to the middle, finding Conyers. She controlled the pass, took a quick side-dribble and fired a shot into the back of the net to put Tech up 1-0. It was Conyers' third goal in the last two games.

Only 40 seconds later, Mayrose scored from only a few yards out. The play was set up by junior Jordan Coburn, who sent a ball down the wing to Conyers, who dribbled past her defender and sent a ball across the front of the goal. Mayrose finished the pass to put Tech up 2-0.

The momentum continued into the 64th minute, when Tiernan finished on a cross from senior Danielle King. It was Tiernan’s team-leading seventh goal of the year.

Once again, the Tech backline shutdown any offensive threat East Carolina threw their way. The Hokies held the Pirates to only two shots on goal and zero corners.

Junior Caroline Kelly played most of the game in goal, but only needed to make two saves. Freshman Kaylyn Smith entered the game in the 83rd minute but didn’t need to make any saves.

Compared to the 2012 nine-game winning streak, this year’s streak has come in much more dominant fashion. In 2012, Tech outscored their opponents 20-2 during the streak. This year, Tech has scored 36 goals and given up three.

The Hokies open ACC play in their next game against Clemson on Friday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. at Thompson Field.
