FARMVILLE, Va. - The third-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team earned a tough mid-week road win against Longwood on Tuesday night. Three goals off of headers and another on a counter attack gave Tech the 4-1 non-conference win.

“4-1 is a good result for us tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “Longwood was a very difficult match for us. They did a good job defending well and condensing the space. I think we were able to balance the minutes, and now we’ve got to get ready for Buffalo on Friday.”

On the same day the Hokies (7-0-0) received their highest ranking in program history, the Hokies continued their hot-streak with their seventh win in as many games. Tech came into the game as the highest scoring offense in the ACC and it showed why tonight against Longwood (2-2-1).

The scoring began for the Hokies in the seventh minute when sophomore Murielle Tiernan connected on a header sent into the box from junior Morgan Conklin for her third goal of the year.

A few minutes later, Tech nearly connected on a corner kick from junior Jordan Coburn as sophomore Candace Cephers headed a ball barely over the cross bar.

No further scoring would happen in the first half, and the Hokies entered the break with 11 shots and five corners, compared to Longwood’s one shot, zero corners.

The Hokies struck quickly in the second half with a goal after just three minutes of play. Freshman Madi Conyers dribbled from the wing towards the goal then sent a cross to the far post that found Tiernan’s head for her second of the game to put the Hokies up 2-0.

Only seconds later, the Lancers answered with a score after a jumbled cross lay in front of the goal and Teresa Fruchterman finished the ball, cutting the Tech lead to 2-1.

In the 65th minute, Tiernan grabbed another stat on the night when she assisted junior Ashley Meier with a cross from the left side. Tiernan sent the ball in the air through the middle where the slashing Meier picked up the third head-goal of the game for the Hokies.

With thirteen minutes to go in the game, freshman Laila Gray dribbled down half of the field on a counter attack before finding senior Ellie Zoepfl wide open. Zoepfl took one touch then fired home her second of the year to put Tech up 4-1.

During the seven-game winning streak the Hokies are enjoying, it hasn’t just been the offense that has performed exceptional, but the defense has put up numbers among the best in the country. In seven games, the defense has only allowed a total of three goals and nine shots on goal.

The defensive force for the Hokies - consisting of defenders Conklin, Senior Jodie Zelenky, Coburn, senior Danielle King and defensive midfielder Cephers - proved impenetrable yet again tonight, holding the Lancers to only three shots on goal and two corner kicks.

Freshman Kaylyn Smith got the knod in goal for Tech, making her first start. She made two saves in the game and conceded one goal before sophomore Blayne Fink stepped in for the last ten minutes.

With the win, the Hokies improve to 7-0-0 on the year. Tech needs two more wins to match the best start to any season, which came in 2012 when it won it’s first nine games.

The Hokies return to action on Friday, Sept. 12 when they host Buffalo at 4 p.m.
