BLACKSBURG - Following the impressive weekend performance in the Virginia Tech Tournament, the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team has been tabbed the number-three team in the nation by three major pols, NSCAA, Soccer America and Topdrawersoccer.com, and earned numerous individual honors.
Junior Jordan Coburn has been named to the College Soccer 360 Primetime Performers Weekly Honor Roll and sophomore Murielle Tiernan and senior Shannon Mayrose were named to the Honorable Mention Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week.
The Hokies jumped two spots in the rankings after grabbing the number-five spot last week. The number three ranking is the highest in program history, passing the previous mark of number four. Last season, the Hokies finished the year as the number-four team in the country after earning a berth into the NCAA College Cup for the first time in program history. They began this season as the preseason number-five team according to the NSCAA coaches’ poll. All three of the major women’s college soccer rankings placed Tech in the three spot behind last year’s national champion, UCLA, and cross-state rival UVA.
Tech began the year dominating VCU, Davidson and Akron before travelling to Ohio State and earning a 3-1 victory. In those first four games, it is likely many wondered if the dominating success could continue against some of the nation’s toughest teams. The answer came on Friday night when No. 13 Georgetown, a red-hot program with a history of success, came to town to face the Hokies. Tech looked unstoppable in the lopsided 6-1 victory over the Hoyas. Following the big win on Friday, the Hokies defated UNC Wilmington, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon.
Coburn led the Tech defense in limiting Georgetown’s offense to only one shot on goal and zero corners. The strong defender showed her speed on numerous plays, chasing down and stopping any threat from the Hoya offense and 2012 BIG EAST Player of the Year, Daphne Corboz. The Hokie defense also secured a shutout against UNC Wilmington, allowing only two shots on goal.
Sophomore Murielle Tiernan scored two goals against Georgetown and assisted another against UNC Wilmington. Senior Shannon Mayrose assisted two goals against Georgetown and scored one against UNC Wilmington. The Mayrose-Tiernan duo up front has produced five goals and four assists so far this season.
The undefeated Hokies play at Longwood Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in a non-conference test.
