BLACKSBURG - The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will play in it’s third game in five days on Tuesday when it travels to Longwood, looking to extend their six-game winning streak. The game is scheduled to kickoff at 7 p.m.
Fresh off of a dominating, two-win performance in the Virginia Tech Tournament, the Hokies will look to build off of their impressive 6-1 thrashing of No. 13 Georgetown last Friday night and their 2-0 win over UNC Wilmington on Sunday.
Tech has made a habit of taking control of games early, notching 14 first-half goals and conceding none. In all but one game, they have scored in the first fifteen minutes of play.
Over the weekend, the Hokies showed just how balanced their offense can be. In only two games, they had seven different players score. So far this season an unprecedented 12 different players have recorded goals.
It isn’t only the offense that has put up impressive numbers, but the defense has proved to be just as successful. Led by junior Jordan Coburn and senior Jodie Zelenky, the Hokies have only allowed four goals and nine shots on goal. Playing against former BIG EAST Player of the Year, Daphne Corboz, Tech’s defense shut down the high-powered Georgetown offense, allowing only one shot on goal and zero corner kicks.
On Sunday, Tech faced off against UNC Wilmington and finished the weekend with a 2-0 win. Junior Ashley Meier and senior Shannon Mayrose were the only players to score for Tech, but the Hokies pounded the Seahawks with 24 shots.
Longwood comes into the game with a 2-1-1 record, having beaten VMI 4-0 on Sunday. They are led by senior Samantha Phillips and freshman Teresa Fruchterman, who both have two goals this season. Their junior defender, Meghan Magee, was named the Big South Defensive Player of the Week after the 4-0 win over VMI.
Tech holds the advantage in the series against the Lancers, having won four and lost none. They last met in 2009 in Blacksburg when the Hokies won 3-0.
Following Tuesday’s match, the Hokies return home to face Buffalo on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m.
