BLACKSBURG, Va. - The No. 5 Virginia Tech Hokies didn’t let a top-fifteen ranked opponent stop their streak of dominating wins as they beat No. 13 Georgetown 6-1 at Thompson Field on Friday night in the Virginia Tech Tournament.

Tech (5-0) played astounding defense on the night only allowing Georgetown (3-1-1) to take four total shots and one shot on goal. Not only did the Hokies play quality defense, but the offense was clicking on all cylinders.

“I was pleased with our play tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “We wanted to get after them, and some of our athleticism and combination play allowed us to create and put away our chances.”

Once again, Tech had balance in its scoring as five different Hokies found the back of the net. Danielle King, Kallie Peurifoy, Ellie Zoepfl and Alani Johnson scored one, and Murielle Tiernan put away two.

In the 12th minute, the flood of scoring began for the Hokies when Danielle King hit an incredible 35-yard shot that sailed past the keeper into the upper far right corner to put the Hokies up 1-0.

Only two minutes later Murielle Tiernan notched her first of the year when she sent a diving header into the goal. Senior Shannon Mayrose dribbled past two defenders from the right side and sent a cross over the goalie to a slashing Tiernan to make the score 2-0.

Shortly after halftime, the Hoyas put their mark on the game with a deep goal from the center of the midfield. Grace Damaska found herself with space about 30 yards away from the goal and sent a soaring shot to the upper corner, past the fingers of Tech keeper Caroline Kelly to make the score 2-1 in favor of the Hokies.

Despite giving up a goal, Tech’s defense was dominant for the entire game. Jordan Coburn repeatedly showed her speed in chasing down through balls and the defensive line worked as a unit to limit the Hoyas to only 4 shots the entire game.

Tech responded to the goal, thirty seconds later, on a counterattack that saw Mayrose find Tiernan in space, who finished for her second goal of the match to make the score 3-1.

In the 72nd minute, Kallie Peurifoy dribbled the ball in the box, nutmegged a Georgetown defender and fired a powerful shot past the keeper to bring the Hokie lead to 4-1. It was Peurifoy’s first of the year. Ten minutes later, Ellie Zoepfl picked up a ball from Alani Johnson and fired a shot into the net to take the 5-1 lead. To finish out the flood of scoring, Alani Johnson scored on a pass from Madi Conyers to make it 6-1.

Tech has now scored 22 goals this season, the best scoring start in program history. It has done so with 12 different scorers. It was the fifth-straight game the Hokies have scored at least three goals and the first time Tech has ever scored six goals against a ranked opponent.

The Virginia Tech Tournament continues on Sunday with Wake Forest playing Georgetown at 11:30 a.m. and Tech playing UNC Wilimington at 2 p.m.
