BLACKSBURG - Two undefeated teams collide at Thompson field as the fifth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team squares off against No. 13 Georgetown on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Virginia Tech tournament. Wake Forest and UNC Wilmington will also play at 5:00 p.m. as part of the four-team tournament.
So far this season the Hokies have beaten VCU, Davidson, Akron and Ohio State by a combined score of 16-1. In each game, Tech has taken care of business quickly in the first half. It has entered halftime with at least a two-goal lead in every game and has scored an average of 2.75 goals in the opening 45 minutes.
The balanced Hokie attack has seen goals from eight different players, including three from Candace Cephers, Bria Dixon and Alani Johnson. Last weekend, when the Hokies traveled to Akron and Ohio State, both Johnson and Cephers scored a pair of goals.
Georgetown enters the game with three wins and one draw, having outscored its opponents 14-1. Last Friday, the Hoyas thrashed ACC-foe NC State by a score of 6-0 before beating Towson, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon.
The Hoyas are led by seniors Vanessa Skrumbis and Daphne Corboz, who have combined to score 10 goals and assist five. Skrumbis earned the BIG EAST player of the week honor last week for her impressive four-goal, one-assist performance through two games. She also leads the team in scoring, having notched six goals in four games. In 2012, Corboz was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, and, this year, she was a unanimous selection for the All-BIG EAST Preseason Team.
The two teams have played four times since 2001, but Virginia Tech has yet to defeat Georgetown. Most recently, in 2012, Tech lost, 2-3, in a hard-fought overtime heartbreaker in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Hoya junior Sarah Adams scored the game-winner for Georgetown in the third minute of overtime off of a pass by senior Jessica Clinton.
The Virginia Tech Tournament concludes on Sunday when Wake Forest plays Georgetown at 11:30 a.m., and the Hokies play UNC Wilmington at 2 p.m.
Kickoff for Friday’s game is slated for 7:30 p.m. Livestats will be available online, and live video will be streamed on HokiesXtra.
