COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team defeated Ohio State 3-1 on Sunday night off of goals from Bria Dixon, Candace Cephers and Laila Gray. It was Tech’s fourth-straight victory scoring three goals or more.
With the win, Tech improves to 4-0 on the season, having outscored their opponents 16-1. Ohio State falls to 2-2 with the loss.
“I’m extremely pleased with the result tonight,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “I think we showed we were the better team and deserved the win. I was a little worried about our fitness, having played Friday night, but the girls stepped up to the plate, and we were in charge of the match at halftime with a three-nil lead.”
Dixon, a sophomore from Cary, North Carolina, scored the first goal of the match to extend her season total to three. After a freshman season where she appeared in only nine games, she has stepped up into a quality attacker this season, notching three goals and one assist.
Defensive midfielder and fellow sophomore Cephers saw 22 starts last season, but only scored once the entire year. This season, however, she has scored in each of the last three games.
The Tech offense threatened early in the game with a corner kick in the fourth minute, but it wasn’t until the 12th minute that the Hokies got on the board. Dixon floated a shot over the Ohio State keeper from just inside the 18-yard box to put the Hokies up 1-0.
In the 31st minute, Cephers put herself on the stat sheet with a shot from 25-yards out that deflected off of a Buckeye defender into the goal.
With only eight seconds left in the first half, Tech put away another thanks to Gray’s finish on a pass from Ellie Zoepfl.
The only goal of the second half came from Ohio State’s Michela Paradiso, assisted by Sammy Edwards. It was the first goal the Hokies defense has conceded all season.
The Hokies have made a habit of putting games away early. In four games so far this year, Tech has scored 11 first-half goals and given up none.
Next on the schedule for the Hokies is Georgetown on Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. at Thompson Field for the Virginia Tech Tournament. They will play again on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. against UNC Wilmington.
