BLACKSBURG - The fourth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team travels to the Buckeye State this weekend for a pair of non-conference games beginning against Akron on Friday night and concluding at Ohio State on Sunday night.
After an opening weekend where Tech beat VCU and Davidson by a combined score of 10-0, the Hokies are looking to catch wins against their toughest competition to date.
Akron enters the weekend coming off of a 1-1-1 performance at the Steel City Classic in Pittsburgh last week. They battled Duquesne to a scoreless draw before falling to Pittsburgh, 3-0, and then beating Robert Morris, 2-1, in comeback fashion. Lani Smith, a leader for the Akron squad, scored the equalizing goal off of a corner kick against Robert Morris. She was the team-leader in scoring last season.
Ohio State comes into Sunday’s match having played then-No. 4 North Carolina and then-No. 18 Duke in Chapel Hill last weekend. In their first game of the year, the Buckeye’s upset the Blue Devils 1-0 on a 67th-minute goal from Alexis Dregler. On Sunday, however, the team fell 1-0 to the Tar Heels.
This meeting marks the first time Tech has ever faced Akron. The Hokies have played Ohio State once in 2004, where they fell by a score of 4-1.
Friday’s match will begin at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s match will begin at 6 p.m. Both games will have livestats available online.
Following this weekend’s games, Tech returns home to face Georgetown and UNC Wilmington in the Virginia Tech Tournament next Friday and Sunday.
