DAVIDSON, N.C. - The fifth-ranked Virginia Tech women’s soccer team scored four goals against Davidson to earn its second-straight shutout win on Sunday afternoon.

“The girls played well today and got the result we needed,” head coach Chugger Adair said. “It’s the first double-game weekend of the year so it’s good to get through it with two-wins. I’m glad to see them get this result. A four-zero shutout is always nice.”

Three corners in the first fifteen minutes of the game gave the Hokies (2-0) quality chances in front of the Davidson (1-1) goal, but it wasn’t until the 15th minute that the Hokies took the lead when Shannon Mayrose scored the first Tech goal. In a jumbled crowd of Hokie attackers and Wildcat defenders, Mayrose picked up a blocked shot from Ashley Meier and fired her second goal of the year into the net.

Throughout the first half, Tech nearly scored on several set-piece chances. In the 38th minute, the Hokies’ powerful defensive midfielder, Candace Cephers, connected on a corner from Jordan Coburn to earn her first goal of the year.

Only six minutes later, in a crowded 18 yard box, Alani Johnson showed her speed when she turned the corner around a Davidson defender and punched an outside-post shot into the goal for her first goal of the year.

Kallie Peurifoy started the second half for the Hokies and earned her first assist of the year when she dribbled down the left side of the 18-yard box, sending a cross to the opposite goal post. Dixon capitalized on the pass and volleyed in her second goal of the year in the 67th minute.

In the first two games of the year, the Hokies have outscored their opponents 10-0. This is the first time the program has scored 10 goals in two games since 2004, when the Hokies beat Radford and VMI by a combined score of 13-1.

Next up for Tech on the schedule is an away game against Akron. The game will be played on Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. in Akron, Ohio.
