BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will hit the road to play its second match of the season against Davidson on Sunday.
The fifth-ranked Hokies (1-0) opened the season on Friday night with an emphatic 6-0 win against VCU. In the match, six Tech players earned a goal.
Shannon Mayrose, Katie Yensen and Ashley Meier each scored within the first 20 minutes of the game to decide the result early with the Hokies starting lineup.
In the second half, three players earned their first career goals after Bria Dixon, Morgan Conklin and Laila Gray each stamped their mark in the stat sheet.
Davidson (1-0) enters the match coming off of a season-opening win of its own. On Friday night, the Wildcats shutout Winthrop and grabbed a 2-0 win at home. After twenty minutes of play, Vicky Bruce scored on a penalty kick, and Kate Joss found the back of the net only five minutes later to give the home team the 2-0 lead.
Last season the team, finished 6-11-4, ending their season on a loss in the Southern Conference quarterfinals against Elon.
Virginia Tech and Davidson have squared off eight times since 1993, with the Wildcats winning four, the Hokies winning three and one decided on a tie. The last time they played, in 2009, Tech earned 3-2 victory at home.
After Sunday’s match, the Hokies are scheduled to play at Akron next Friday at 7 p.m.
