BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will look to advance to its first-ever NCAA Women’s College Cup on Friday afternoon, as the Hokies welcome Atlantic Coast Conference rival Duke to Thompson Field for the NCAA Quarterfinals at 4 p.m.

Last Sunday afternoon, Virginia Tech moved past No. 9 Santa Clara in nail-biting fashion, as the Hokies drew the Broncos 1-1 in regular time before topping Santa Clara, 3-1 on penalty kicks. Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts recorded eight saves in the run of play, before stopping three of the four PKs to help Tech move on.

With the third-round win, the Hokies are now 18-4-3 on the year, having set a new program record for victories in a single season. Tech has also scored 51 goals this year, making it the highest-scoring Hokie offense in school history, breaking last season’s record of 45 goals.

Freshman Murielle Tiernan’s goal on Sunday afternoon gives her 11 this year, the most on the team, just ahead of senior Jazmine Reeves, who has 10. Sophomore Ashley Meier sits just behind them with eight goals. Junior Kelsey Loupee has nine assists to pace the Hokies.

Colpitts has continued her stellar career this year, recording 71 saves en route to a 0.72 goals-against-average.

Duke enters Friday’s quarterfinal sporting a 9-8-6 record, after getting past Colorado College on penalties, downing No. 2-seeded Florida and then advancing past Arkansas on PKs as well. Duke went 5-5-3 in ACC play before falling to Florida State, 2-0, in the first round of the ACC Tournament.

The Blue Devils have spread out their 31 goals this season, as Kelly Cobb and Kim DeCesare pace the eight goalscorers with seven and six goals, respectively. Laura Weinberg and Kaitlyn Kerr have each scored five of their own, while Mollie Pathman has tallied seven assists to lead the team.

Meghan Thomas has played all three matches in net for Duke, after a season that saw her tally 51 saves and maintain a 0.91 goals-against-average while splitting time with Ali Kershner.

Duke leads the all-time series between the teams, 9-1-1. The Hokies’ only victory in the series was during the 2008 season, although each of the last four meetings between the teams was decided by a goal or less.

Earlier this year, the two sides met in Durham, N.C., where they battled to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes. Ashley Meier tallied the Hokies’ goal in the 67th minute, finishing off a great team goal with a single touch from 10 yards out.

The winner of Friday’s contest will advance to the 2013 NCAA Women’s College Cup, set to take place on Dec. 6 and 8 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C, where they will face the winner of the Florida State-Boston College match, which is also on Friday afternoon.
