BLACKSBURG, Va. -- After defeating UMBC 2-0 in the first round on Friday evening, the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will host the NCAA Tournament Second and Third Rounds on Friday, Nov. 22 and Sunday, Nov. 24 at Thompson Field, as announced by the NCAA on Sunday.
The Hokies will welcome West Virginia, Boston and Santa Clara, all nationally ranked sides, to Blacksburg this weekend. Boston will face fourth-seeded Santa Clara at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon, while Tech will take on West Virginia at 6 p.m. that evening.
The winners of both contests will meet on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the NCAA Third Round.
Tech enters the second round after taking down UMBC 2-0 this past Friday evening. Junior Shannon Mayrose scored in the 40th minute, before senior Ashley Manning put the match away with a goal in the 61st minute.
West Virginia, currently ranked No. 12 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, bested Rutgers in penalty kicks on Saturday evening in Morgantown, W.Va. to advance to the second round. Tech last faced the Mountaineers two seasons ago in the NCAA Tournament, when the Hokies won 1-0 in Morgantown.
Boston enters this weekend after downing Harvard 1-0 in the first round, while Santa Clara (15-4-1) advanced by way of a 2-1 win over California. Santa Clara is currently ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA Coaches Poll, while Boston is ranked No. 25.
This is the first time Virginia Tech has ever played host to second and third round matches in the NCAA Tournament. Tickets prices will be announced later this week.
