BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team outshot the UMBC Retrievers 20-1 on Friday evening, as the Hokies earned a 2-0 victory in the first round of the NCAA Tournament at Thompson Field.

“I was pleased with the results tonight,” Head Coach Chugger Adair said. “I think the girls earned the win and we’re happy to advance into the second round. UMBC made it difficult for us to play tonight; they had a good game plan and stuck to it.”

Tech entered the match as one of four No. 1 seeds in the bracket, while UMBC earned its spot as champions of the America East Conference.

From the onset, the Hokies asserted their dominance on the offensive end, tallying three shots in the opening 10 minutes.

For much of the first half, the Retrievers played a heavily defensive scheme, often putting eight and nine players behind the ball as the Hokies tried to unlock the UMBC defense.

The breakthrough finally came in the 40th minute on a cross from Taylor Antolino. The senior defender swung a cross in from the right wing that found junior Shannon Mayrose at the near post. Mayrose flicked a header toward goal that beat UMBC goalkeeper Lauren Kadet to put the Hokies up 1-0.

The goal was Mayrose’s second goal of the season and Antolino’s third assist this year.

At halftime, the stat sheet bore evidence of Tech’s control. The Hokies had racked up eight shots, seven shots on goal and two corner kicks, while holding UMBC to zero of all three.

Coming out of the break, Tech continued pressing forward in an effort to double its lead. The Hokie racked up five shots and four corner kicks in the first 10 minutes after halftime.

In the 61st minute, senior Ashley Manning completed the scoring with a fancy bit of play in the box. After receiving a pass from Danielle King, Manning took a touch to the left side of the area and ripped a shot across frame that tucked itself just inside the far post and gave Tech a 2-0 lead.

It was Manning’s fourth goal this season and her first since a 4-0 victory at Pittsburgh on October 20.

Although the Hokies maintained a majority of the possession for the remainder of the game, neither side found the back of the net again, as Tech took home a 2-0 victory.

“I was pleased that we were able to score after halftime,” Adair said. “I think that kind of opened the match up for us. I’d like to be a little sharper around goal in our next match, but we’re pleased and we’re looking forward to our next round matchup.”

The win lifted the Hokies to 17-4-2 on the season, breaking the program record for most victories in a single season, set last year at 16.

With the loss, UMBC ended its year at 13-6-2 just one season after going 1-11-5.

Mayrose and sophomore Ashley Meier paced the Hokie offense on the evening, as each tallied five shots in the win. In all, nine Hokies registered at least one attempt and Tech put nine of its 20 shots on goal.

The Hokie defense held UMBC to just a single shot in the 72nd minute, the lowest total for an opposing team since allowing zero in a 4-0 win over Appalachian State on Sept. 15, 2011.

Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts earned the shutout for the Hokies, though she was not called upon to register a save. Kadet tallied six saves for the Retrievers on the night.

With the victory, Tech moves on to play host to the NCAA Tournament Second and Third Rounds on Friday, Nov. 22 and Sunday, Nov. 24.

The Hokies will meet the winner of tomorrow evening’s Rutgers/West Virginia match in Friday’s second round. Game time for that contest is yet to be determined.
