BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will host its second NCAA Tournament match in as many seasons on Friday evening, as the No. 1-seeded Hokies play host to Maryland-Baltimore County in a first-round match scheduled to kick off at 5 p.m.

Last Sunday, Virginia Tech dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Florida State in the Hokies’ first ACC Tournament Final since the 2008 season. Despite the loss, Tech was named as one of four No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history when the bracket was released on Monday afternoon.

The Hokies enter the NCAA Tournament with a 16-4-2 record this season, tied for the Virginia Tech all-time record for wins in a single season. Tech has also scored 47 goals this year, making it the highest-scoring Hokie offense in school history, breaking last season’s record of 45 goals.

Jazmine Reeves’ pair of goals in the ACC Semifinal gave her 10 this year to lead Tech. The senior is followed closely by Murielle Tiernan, whose goal last Friday was her ninth of the season, and Ashley Meier, who has scored eight times. With her two assists in the semifinals, junior Kelsey Loupee now has nine in 2013, tied for the third-most in a single season at Virginia Tech.

UMBC enters Friday’s first-round contest as the champions of the America East Tournament, completing one of the nation’s biggest single-season turnarounds. The Retrievers finished this year with a 13-5-2 record after going 1-11-5 in 2012. They earned their NCAA berth with a 2-1 victory over second-seeded Stony Brook this past Saturday in the AEC Championship and have won their last four matches in a row.

The UMBC offense boasts a pair of players that have notched 17 points in 2013, with both Alexa Quaranta (8G, 1A) and Jessy Brown (7G, 3A) reaching the mark. Melissa Hummel has not scored a goal for the Retrievers, but leads the squad in assists with six.

Lauren Kadet has played every minute in goal for UMBC, talling 82 saves en route to 13 wins and a 0.95 goals-against-average.

The Hokies and Retrievers have only faced off once in the past, a 4-2 victory in Blacksburg during the 1998 season.

With their selection on Monday, the Hokies have now appeared in six consecutive NCAA Tournaments. They have reached the Sweet 16 twice (2009, 2011) and this is the highest-ever seed they have ever earned.

Friday evening’s contest will have live stats available at the attached link. Admission to the match will be $7 for adults and $3 for students, seniors and children under three.
