INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team has been selected as one of four No. 1 seeds for the 32nd NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, as announced by the Division I Women’s Soccer Committee on Monday.

The Hokies earned one of the top four spots in the 64-team tournament after a 2013 season that saw them go 16-4-2, tied for the most wins in a season in program history, and included five wins over nationally-ranked opponents and a 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference semifinal win over previously undefeated Virginia.

“I’m very proud of this team,” Head Coach Chugger Adair said. “The girls have done a tremendous job this year and I think they deserve it. The girls worked hard this year, made a commitment and they’ve had very good results.”

This is the sixth consecutive year that Tech has been selected to the NCAA Tournament and the first-ever No. 1 seed for the Hokies. Tech has advanced to the Sweet 16 on two occasions: 2009 and 2011.

As the top seed in their quadrant, the Hokies will face UMBC, the champions of the American East Conference, in a 5 p.m. match on Friday, November 15. The Retrievers posted a 13-5-2 record this year and will be making their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

All four No. 1 seeds in the bracket were awarded to the four ACC semifinalists from last week’s ACC Tournament, as Virginia, Florida State and North Carolina all hold the top spot in their quadrant as well.

“Going through our conference has been a challenge all year,” Adair said. “It’s nice to see that our accomplishments were recognized by the selection committee. We look forward to backing up our seeding and getting after it on Friday evening.”

Florida (a 2-seed), UCF (3-seed) and Santa Clara (4-seed) represent the other three seeded teams in Tech’s quadrant. Fellow ACC member Duke, who the Hokies drew 1-1 in Durham, N.C. earlier this season, is also in Tech’s quarter of the bracket.

Thirty-one conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2013 championship, while the remaining 33 teams were selected at-large. The top 16 teams are seeded and conference teams cannot play each other in the first or second rounds. When pairing teams, the committee follows geographic proximity parameters. Sites are selected for the first round to create the least number of flights.

First-round matches will be played at campus sites November 15 and 16. Second round matches will be played Friday, November 22, at campus sites, and third-round matches will be played Sunday, November 24, at the same campus sites. Quarterfinal matches will be played November 29 and 30 also on campus sites.

The 32nd annual NCAA Women’s College Cup will be played December 6 and December 8 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, with Campbell University serving as host. The first national semifinal will be played and shown live on ESPNU at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, December 6. The second semifinal will begin at approximately 7:30 p.m. Eastern time and air live on ESPNU. The national championship match will take place Sunday, December 8 at 3:00 p.m. Eastern time and will also broadcast live on ESPNU.
