BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will wrap up its regular season on Thursday evening, when the Hokies travels to Charlottesville, Va. to face top-ranked Virginia in a 7 p.m. match on Halloween night.

Virginia Tech made it nine wins in 11 matches on Sunday afternoon, when the Hokies earned a 1-0 Senior Day win over Miami at Thompson Field. Freshman Murielle Tiernan scored the match’s only goal in the 14th minute and the Hokie defense earned its ninth shutout of the season to carry Tech to the win.

Sunday’s victory lifted the Hokies to 14-2-2 on the season, including a 9-2-1 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Heading into the regular-season finale, Tech is on pace to break records for most goals scored in a season and fewest goals allowed in a season.

Twelve players have combined to score 41 goals for the Hokies, just four short of the program record of 45, set during the 2009 season. Tech has also allowed just 12 goals to opponents this year, while the all-time record for any Hokie team was set last year with 20. The Hokies are also in the midst of their longest-ever streak of matches in which they have scored at least one goal. Dating back to last year’s match against Virginia, Tech has scored in 20 consecutive contests.

Virginia enters Thursday evening’s contest as the consensus No. 1 team in the country for the seventh consecutive week, sporting an 18-0-0 record in 2013, including a 12-0-0 mark in the ACC. Last week, the Cavs shut out a pair of opponents at home, posting a 4-0 win over Miami before taking down No. 3 Florida State 1-0 in overtime.

A trio of double-digit scorers has paced Virginia in 2013. Morgan Brian has tallied 32 points (10G, 12A) this season, the most in the conference, while Makenzy Doniak and Brittany Ratcliffe have scored 13 and 11 goals, respectively.

Morgan Stearns has seen the majority of time in goal for Virginia, recording 27 saves in her 14 starts en route to a 0.46 goals-against-average, the lowest in the ACC.

The Cavs have held a sizable advantage in the all-time series between the two sides, as Tech is just 2-12-1 against Virginia. The last Hokie win in the series came during the 2009 season, when Tech went to Charlottesville and knocked off the 18th-ranked Cavaliers in a 2-1 decision.

This is just the second match-up in series history in which both sides have been nationally-ranked at the time. Last year, the No. 22 Hokies fell to the No. 14 Cavs. This is also the first contest in any sport between Virginia Tech and Virginia in which both teams have been ranked in the top five nationally.

Tech sits in third place in the crowded ACC and Thursday’s results across the conference will determine the Hokies’ seed for the ACC Tournament. The Hokies have already clinched a home match in the quarterfinals at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 3 and can finish anywhere between second and fourth in the final standings.
