BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Despite battling back from an early deficit on Thursday evening, the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team fell in heartbreaking fashion, as the No. 4 Hokies dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 3 Florida State on a goal in the 87th minute.

Both teams entered the match riding hot streaks, as Tech had not lost in nine matches, tying a program record, while the Seminoles remain one of two unbeaten teams in the country.

The Hokies controlled the match from the outset, taylling three shots and a corner kick in the first 11 minutes, but it was FSU that broke through first, against the run of play.

In the 16th minute, the Seminoles played a ball in that bounced between players inside the box. Dagny Brynjarsdottir latched onto the rebound at the top of the area, took a touch and fired a shot through traffic that snuck inside the left post to put FSU up 1-0.

Both sides exchanged chances for the remainder of the first period, with neither team getting a great look at goal.

At halftime, the Hokies led FSU in shots (5-3) and corner kicks (5-0), but still trailed by the single goal.

After the break, Tech again pushed forward, seeking the tying goal. The Hokies dominated possession and tested FSU goalkeeper Kelsey Wys often. Sophomore Ashley Meier finally broke through in the 72nd minute, as Tech capitalized on a chance that began in the attacking third.

Junior Shannon Mayrose stepped in front of a Seminole pass deep in FSU territory, something the Hokies had been pushing for throughout the match. Mayrose slipped a quick pass to Meier, who ripped a shot from 20 yards out that buried itself in the top-left corner of the net to level things at 1-1.

The goal was Meier’s eighth of the season, the most of any Hokie, and her first since a 1-1 draw at Duke on September 29. The assist was Mayrose’s second in six matches since returning from injury.

Both teams surged forward following the goal, as each side pushed for a winner. It was Brynjarsdottir that broke the deadlock deep into the match.

Carson Pickett began the play, controlling a rebound on the left side before hitting a long cross to the far post. Brynjarsottir stepped back and headed the ball across frame and into the side netting to give the Seminoles the 2-1 victory.

The stat sheet skewed heavily in the Hokies’ favor, as Tech outshot the Seminoles 12-5 and earned nine corners while holding FSU to zero.

Six different Hokies tallied shots on the evening, led by Meier’s four, while Brynjarsdottir was responsible for all five of FSU’s attempts. With the goal, Meier now has back-to-back eight-goal seasons to begin her collegiate career and is just one goal from cracking the top ten all-time at Virginia Tech.

Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts recorded a pair of saves for Tech.

The loss drops the Hokies to 13-2-2 on the year, including an 8-2-1 mark in the ACC. FSU is now 14-0-3 and 9-0-2 in conference play.

“I’m really proud of the girls’ efforts this evening,” Adair said. “We battled back after going down a goal early; we just couldn’t get a second goal to fall for us. We’ll build on this effort and get better because of it.”

The Hokies will be back in action on Sunday, October 27, when they play host to Miami in a match scheduled to start at noon. Tech will celebrate Senior Day and will hold a short ceremony to honor the eight senior Hokies prior to the match.
