BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team will hit the road for the first time in four matches on Sunday afternoon, as the No. 6 Hokies travel north for a 1 p.m. match at Pittsburgh.
The Hokies sit in third place in the powerful Atlantic Coast Conference entering Sunday’s match, one point ahead of fourth-place North Carolina and one point behind second-place Florida State. Tech earned its spot on the wings of an overtime win over No. 19 Wake Forest on Thursday evening.
Freshman Murielle Tiernan slammed home a goal from close range in the ninth minute of overtime to lift the Hokies to a victory over the Demon Deacons. Tech had fallen behind 11 minutes into the game, marking the first time the Hokies had trailed since a loss to No. 1 North Carolina on September 12, before junior Shannon Mayrose scored from 20 yards to level things at 1-1 in the 26th minute.
Twelve different players have scored a total of 35 goals for the Hokies in 2013. Senior Jazmine Reeves and Meier have led the way so far, tallying seven goals each in the first 14 matches of the season. Freshman Murielle Tiernan has scored six goals to go with four assists, tied for most on the team with Reeves, Kelsey Loupee and Katie Yensen.
The Hokies are now 12-1-2 on the season, including a 7-1-1 mark ACC play, after going undefeated in non-conference play for the second consecutive season. Tech is also yet to give up more than two goals in any match this season.
Tech’s efforts have propelled it into the national rankings, as the Hokies sit at No. 6 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Poll and Top Drawer Soccer’s National Top 25, as well as No. 7 in the RPI rankings, released weekly by the NCAA.
Pittsburgh enters Sunday’s match sporting a 4-10-1 record, with an 0-9-0 ACC mark in its first year as a member of the conference. The Panthers are coming off a full week without a match, after dropping a 4-0 decision at No. 3 Florida State last Sunday.
Roosa Arvas and Alex Charlebois each have two goals this season, tied for the top spot on the Panthers. Six Pittsburgh players have combined to score eight goals in 2013. Arvas has also tallied a trio of assists on the year to lead the Panthers.
Nicole D’Agostino has started 13 of Pittsburgh’s 15 matches, racking up 77 saves to lead the ACC in the category. The junior owns a 1.58 goals-against-average this season.
Tech has not faced the Panthers in women’s soccer since 2002. That match, played prior to either team joining the ACC, was a 2-0 victory for the Hokies in Pittsburgh.
Any result for the Hokies other than a loss on Sunday afternoon will clinch a spot for Tech in the ACC Tournament.
