BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Junior Katie Yensen buried a penalty kick in the third minute and the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team earned its third consecutive shutout, as the Hokies picked up their second Atlantic Coast Conference road win of the year with a 1-0 victory over Boston College on Sunday afternoon.

The Hokies started quickly, earning a corner kick in the first minute, before Reeves was fouled in the box just 2:06 into the match. Yensen stepped up to take the kick and calmly buried the chance to give Tech the 1-0 lead.

Yensen’s goal was her first of the season, and the sixth of her career. Four of the junior’s six career goals have also served as game-winning goals.

“We played very well at the start of the match,” Head Coach Chugger Adair. “Our offense put them under a lot of pressure, enough that we may have deserved another goal. I was very happy with our start.”

Following the goal, Tech continued to push forward and control the match, as the Hokies racked up four shots and three corner kicks in the first 20 minutes. The remainder of the first half was evenly matched, as the sides ended the half with the Hokies holding a 6-3 advantage in shots.

After the break, the Tech defense tightened the clamps, as Boston College tallied seven second-half shots, but only forced a pair of saves out of senior Hokie goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts.

Yensen and freshman Candace Cephers led the Tech offense on the day, as each tallied a pair of shots. In addition to her second-half saves, Colpitts recorded a save in the opening period to finish with three en route to her fifth shutout of the year.

“Boston College is a very good team and they played very well in fighting back against us,” Adair said. “I’m extremely happy and proud of the girls and their performance today, as well as this weekend. Going on the road and winning two games in the ACC is no small feat, but the girls battled hard and got the results.”

The victory gives Tech an 8-1-1 record in 2013, including a 3-1-0 record in the ACC. This season marks the best in-conference start for the Hokies since 2009, when they won their first four ACC matches.

The Eagles’ loss dropped them to 4-5-0 on the year, with a 1-3-0 mark in ACC play. Alex Johnson recorded a pair of saves for BC on the day.

Tech will continue its four-match road trip on Thursday evening, when they travel down to Raleigh, N.C. for a 7 p.m. match against NC State. Live stats will be available for the match.
