COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Virginia Tech women’s soccer team scored a goal in each half on its way to an Atlantic Coast Conference road win on Thursday evening, as the No. 23 Hokies took down No. 21 Maryland, 2-0.

Both sides entered the match with one early ACC win to their name and, thanks to goals from seniors Katie DeTuro and Jazmine Reeves, the Hokies were able to earn their second and keep pace with the conference leaders.

“This was a great result for us tonight,” Head Coach Chugger Adair said. “The team worked hard, stuck to our game plan and competed throughout.”

Tech repelled an early Maryland threat, as the Terps were denied on three shots, including a pair from ACC scoring leader Hayley Brock, in a span of less than two minutes midway through the first period.

Towards the end of the opening half, the Hokies broke through in the 38th minute by way of a set piece. Junior Kelsey Loupee curled in a corner kick that found DeTuro, who headed home the chance to put Tech up 1-0.

The goal was DeTuro’s first of the season and the fifth tally of the senior’s career. With the goal, she also becomes the eighth different Hokie to score in 2013.

Just after halftime, the Terps had a golden opportunity to draw level, when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 49th minute, after a Hokie handball in the box. Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts kept Tech on top, however, guessing correctly on the shot and turning the PK away.

From that point on, the Hokies controlled the second half, tallying nine shots to Maryland’s one after the penalty kick and forcing four more saves out of goalkeeper Rachelle Beanlands.

The final shot of the match sealed the victory for Tech, as freshman Murielle Tiernan found Reeves in the box with a pass in the 88th minute. The senior found herself one-on-one with Beanlands and finished with confidence to give the Hokies the 2-0 advantage.

The goal was Reeves’ seventh on the year, tops on the team, and the 21st of her career, giving her sole possession of sixth place among Tech’s all-time leaders.

In all, 10 different Hokies recorded shots on the evening, as Tech outshot the Terps 17-8 for the match. Reeves and sophomore Ashley Meier led the way, as each grabbed a trio of shots.

Colpitts tallied three saves for the Hokies en route to her second straight shutout. Tech also forced a total of eight saves out of Beanlands.

“Hats off to the girls tonight, as well as Dayle for a really big save on the PK at the start of the second half,” Adair said. “Any time you can get three points on the road in the ACC, that’s a good result.”

With the win, Tech moves to 7-1-1 on the season, with a 2-1-0 record in ACC play, having won five of its last six matches. This marks the best in-conference start for the Hokies since 2009, when they started their ACC schedule with three consecutive wins.

The Terps fall to 5-3-0 with the loss and are now 1-1-0 in conference matches.

The Hokies will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, when they head to Boston College for the second match of a four-match road trip. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. and live stats will be available.
