BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Two goals and an assist from senior Jazmine Reeves buoyed the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team as it captured its first Atlantic Coast Conference victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, downing Syracuse 3-0 at Thompson Field.

On a mild fall afternoon in Blacksburg, the Hokies (6-1-1, 1-1-0 ACC) controlled the match from the start, out-possessing the visiting Orange (4-4-0, 0-2-0 ACC) by a great deal in the early going.

Reeves almost broke through in the ninth minute, when her breakaway shot was saved, but the senior opened her scoring account just four minutes later. Freshman Murielle Tiernan held the ball up in the attacking third and slipped a pass to an oncoming Reeves. The forward split a pair of defenders with a dribble and beat the keeper one-on-one to put the Hokies up 1-0 in the 13th minute.

“I think we started strong, scoring an early goal was key for us,” Head Coach Chugger Adair said. “We tried to move the ball a little bit to keep them on their toes and I think we did a good job of that. “

Neither side had many opportunities for the remainder of the half, as each team went into the break with three shots.

After halftime, neither team could gain much of a footing in the early going, as much of the significant possession was in the midfield.

Kelsey Loupee broke through and doubled the Hokies’ lead in the 61st minute, with Reeves serving as the catalyst once again. Reeves beat a defender to the right corner and cut up the endline before sending in a low cross. Loupee timed her run perfectly and only needed one touch to beat the keeper and give Tech a 2-0 advantage on her second goal of 2013.

Just two minutes later, Reeves scored a second goal to complete her brace and put the match truly out of reach. Jordan Coburn played a perfectly weighted ball over the top of the defense that Reeves ran on to. With just the keeper to beat, the senior calmly slotted a shot inside the left post to make the scoreline 3-0.

“I thought we could’ve maybe been a little sharper in the attacking third during the first half,” Adair said. “But the second half was much better and sharper around the box and we were able to score a couple more goals. The girls did a good job, we defended well and earned the shutout. It was a good performance overall and I’m happy about it.

With the pair of goals, Reeves has six on the season, passing Tiernan and Ashley Meier for the team lead. Her four assists are also a team high. She is also working her way up career lists at Tech, as her 20 goals now sit sixth in program history and her 18 assists ties her for third all-time.

Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts also made history on the day, as she made one save to earn her 21st career shutout, setting a new Virginia Tech record. Colpitts already owns the career record for wins as a Hokie.

Brittany Anghel made three saves for the Orange, while Taylor Haenlin led the offense with a pair of shots.

The Hokies will be back in action on Thursday, September 19, when they embark on a four-match ACC road trip. Tech travels to Maryland for Thursday’s match, which kicks off at 7 p.m.
