BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts’ 20th career shutout and a suffocating midfield presence carried the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Charlotte on Friday evening at Thompson Field.
In the matchup between a pair of unbeaten teams, the Hokies (4-0-1) held the advantage throughout the first half. Tech dominated on the score sheet, firing nine shots, while holding Charlotte (3-1) without a single attempt.
“I thought we started very well,” Head Coach Chugger Adair. “We got going and controlled the tempo through the whole first half and set a tone for the game. We controlled possession and dictated what we wanted to do.”
The Hokies started the match very much on the offensive, tallying six shots in the first 27 minutes. In the 31st minute, Tech finally broke through, although it was the 49ers who did the finishing.
Senior Jazmine Reeves beat her defender to the left corner before cutting back down the end line toward goal. Her low pass into the box sought out senior Ashley Manning, who was cutting through the box. A pair of Charlotte defenders slid in and got to the ball first, but the duo deflected the ball into the net, putting Tech up 1-0 before halftime.
The Hokies tallied three more shots in the period, forcing two saves out of Charlotte goalkeeper Alex Kubrick, but did not find the back of the net on their own until after the break.
Freshman Murielle Tiernan again did the damage for Tech, burying her fourth goal in five collegiate matches in the 53rd minute. After the Hokies earned a corner, junior Kelsey Loupee sent a perfect cross towards the six-yard line. Tiernan beat her defender and nodded the ball into the middle of the net to give Tech the 2-0 lead.
The effort would mark the last serious scoring opportunity for either team, as both sides battled mostly in the midfield for the remainder of the match.
Although Colpitts was only required to make one save on the evening, it earned her a historic milestone. With her 20th career shutout, she matches Mallory Soldner for the most in Virginia Tech history. Kubrick recorded three saves for the 49ers on the evening.
Eight different players tallied shots on the evening for Tech, as the Hokies outshot Charlotte 11-6 for the match.
“I think we did a great job playing out of the back and in the midfield, but we probably struggled a little bit in the attacking third. I would have like to have seen a little more sharpness up front to kind of put the game away a little earlier, “ Adair said. “I’m very happy with the result, it was a good game for us and it was nice to be home on a nice night here in Blacksburg.”
The Hokies will be back in action on Sunday evening, when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va. for a 7 p.m. match against James Madison. Live stats and live video will be available at the above links.
