WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomore Ashley Meier and senior Jazmine Reeves both scored a pair of goals to carry the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team to a 4-2 victory over North Texas at the Wake Forest Invitational on Sunday afternoon.

“We’re very excited to come out of this match with a win,” Head Coach Chugger Adair said. “North Texas is a very hard-working team that made it difficult to for us to play our game.”

The Hokies struck first, as Meier delivered the only goal of the opening period in the 20th minute. Junior Katie Yensen won the ball at the top of the box and the ball fell to Meier, who finished the chance to put Tech up 1-0.

The two sides were fairly even at the break, as Tech had taken just eight shots to the Mean Green’s six. However, the Hokies had taken five corner kicks to UNT’s one.

The second half provided more than its share of action, as the teams combined for five goals, all in the first 23 minutes of the period.

Reeves doubled the Hokies’ lead just a couple minutes after halftme, as Meier sent a ball over the top to the winger, who ran onto the pass and finished past the keeper to give the Hokies a 2-0 lead in the 48th minute.

Just two minutes later, however, North Texas gained a foothold in the match with a goal of its own. Vanessa Ibewuike fired a long-range shot that managed to get past Hokie goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts to halve Tech’s lead in the 50th minute.

In the 54th minute, the Mean Green completed its comeback, tying the match by way of a set piece. Kelsey Hodges played the ball across the area and Karla Pineda headed it back towards a crowd before Lindsey Hulstein finished the job to level the score at 2-2.

The Hokies put themselves back on top to stay in the 65th minute, as Meier netted her third goal of the season. A long pass from sophomore Jordan Coburn beat North Texas’ offside trap, springing senior Ashley Manning, who tapped a pass to Meier for the eventual game-winner.

Reeves sealed the win just three minutes later when she collected a through ball from sophomore Morgan Conklin, rounded the keeper with a dribble and scored to give the Hokies the 4-2 victory. It was also Reeves’ third goal of the season.

“It was important to come out of here with a win and build off of Friday night’s match,” Adair said. “It’s important to learn how to win these games. I’m very proud of how the girls handled themselves after giving up a two-goal lead. I’m proud of how they played today; we got better over this weekend and we’re hoping to keep improving ourselves.”

Meier led the way for the Hokies on offense, totaling five shots to go with her assist and pair of goals, while Reeves put all three of her shots on target.

Despite the two goals, Colpitts made a trio of saves to give Tech the win, the 30th of the senior’s career. Jackie Kerestine recorded four saves in her 74 minutes in goal for the Mean Green.

With the victory, the Hokies are now 3-0-1 in 2013, while North Texas falls to 2-2 following the loss.

Tech will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 6, as it takes on Charlotte in a 5 p.m. match at Thompson Field. The first 200 fans will receive free women’s soccer shirts.
