WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Freshman Murielle Tiernan’s third goal in as many matches earned the Virginia Tech women’s soccer team a 1-1 draw with Louisville on Friday afternoon at the Wake Forest Invitational.

Tonight’s game was a very hard-fought game between two solid teams,” Head Coach Chugger Adair said. “I thought we played and moved the ball better than we had so far this season, and for the most part handled their counter-attack and very athletic front line very well.”

Tiernan struck early, putting the Hokies up 1-0 in just the fifth minute. The freshman collected a pass from junior Ellie Zoepfl and fired a shot from the top of the box that beat the keeper and found the back of the net.

Tech’s lead was short-lived, however, as the Cardinals struck back in the 13th minute. Christine Exeter collected a pass from Devyn Ciotti in the corner and sent a cross into the area that Casey Whitfield was able to volley home from close-range to bring the scoreline back even at 1-1.

Both teams traded shots for the remainder of the first half as neither side could quite gain a foothold on the offensive side of the ball.

In the second half, the match saw more consistent offensive play, as both teams were able to string multiple shots together within minutes of each other.

Tech and Louisville were able to combine for just five shots in the two 10-minute overtime periods, though Tiernan almost gave the Hokies the victory in the second minute of overtime, as her shot struck the crossbar but was cleared away.

The match was tightly-contested throughout, as Tech finished the match with 16 shots (six on goal) to Louisville’s 15 (five on goal), but tallied 11 corner kicks to the Cardinals’ seven.

Tiernan’s four shots on the day led the way for Tech, and she was the only player on the field to put more than one shot on target.

Senior goalkeeper Dayle Colpitts, who broke the Hokies’ record for most career wins last weekend, recorded five saves to preserve the point for Tech. Paige Brown tallied three saves for Louisville.

“It was unfortunate that we didn’t get the win as we played a hard 110 minutes of soccer,” Adair said. “Our team grew tonight and we know we still need to learn how to win these tight, difficult games.”

With the draw, Tech is now 2-0-1 this season, while Louisville moves to 1-1-1. The Hokies will be back in action on Sunday, when they face North Texas in an 11:30 a.m. bout. Live stats for the match will be available.
